Town of New Market Uses Economic Development Tools to Spur Business Growth and Tourism

The Town of New Market has been busy positioning their Main Street and historic district with economic development programs to continue to encourage business growth and enhance tourism. With the Town’s population expected to double within the next decade, New Market provides its own historically unique downtown district, making them well-positioned to be a greater shopping and tourism destination.

Covering 16 square blocks with 137 commercial buildings, New Market - who became a Maryland Main Street affiliate in 2016, has applied to become the 5th Main Street community with the full designation from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development in Frederick County. The Town has also recently sought the Arts & Entertainment Historic District designation from the Maryland Arts Council to help broaden its business scope.

By achieving the full designation as a Main Street community, New Market hopes to use the technical assistance of the program to creative incentives to attract more businesses and artists, re-position the Town to present a more diversified community that offers multiple live, work, shop and play options, and repurpose the current Town Hall structure on Main Street to enhance critical mass of activities. The Arts & Entertainment District will help spur additional arts-based economic development.

The Town’s Streetscape Program nearing completion, has transformed Main Street into a very walkable, intimate shopping venue. New brick sidewalks, cubs, new lighting, street furniture and paving have given New Market fresh, new curb appeal.

This energy has also encouraged other businesses to invest in the town as well. Milo’s restaurant has been steadily expanding their facilities, Vintage restaurant has expanded their hours, Mid Maryland Performing Arts Center has recently renovated their studio and Runkles Sign Service has renovated and expanded to accommodate expanding business needs.

While the town still has eight uniquely different antiques businesses, new welcome additions have added to the Town’s offerings. Cuppa Love, a tea shop, and Peridot, a boutique that offers art and other gifts have recently opened. New Market Plains Vineyards, situated on the farm of one of the Town’s founders, was also recently annexed into the town.

New Market’s ‘Community Appreciation Day’ will be held August 11th beginning at 11:00am which includes a Meet & Greet with state and local elected officials as well as food trucks, music featuring three bands, a pet clinic and much more.

Be sure to also mark your calendars now for ‘Harvest Day’ on October 13th at 9:00am which kicks off with the Fighter’s Run, a 5K to support breast cancer research. The day will be full of great food, lively music with artisans and an antique tractor show. The year will conclude with the 3rd Annual Christmas in New Market on December 1st, complete with old-fashioned family fun, food, a parade and an appearance from Santa Claus himself.
