Ai (Sam) Feng, Owner of Simply Asia, wanted to give back to the community that welcomed him over eight years ago. His idea was to run a lunch special for $10.00 an entree and provide all of the profits to the Thurmont Food Bank. With the help of two of Thurmont’s biggest supporters, Carol Robertson of Catoctin Colorfest, Inc. and Karen Simundson of Senior Benefit Services, Inc., all 120 tickets for the restaurant’s fundraiser were quickly sold. Simply Asia also found support through fellow Thurmont businesses including 1st Look Properties, who printed all of the fundraiser’s tickets.
After seeing such an incredible response, Sam decided to donate the entire amount, 100% of the sales, as a nod to the community that supported his restaurant through the coronavirus crisis.
On Tuesday, May 5th from 12:00-3:00pm, Sam and the team at Simply Asia joined by Sandi Reed Burns of 1st Look Properties, along with Carol Robertson and Karen Simundson to provide curbside services for the entrees that were ordered through the fundraiser. Sam says he is so happy to give back to his community and hopes Simply Asia is able to assist again in a similar way in the future.
“There was much effort put forth by Simply Asia along with collaboration with other Thurmont organizations for this fundraiser,” says Thurmont Main Street Manager Vickie Grinder. “It is heartwarming to know that folks are stepping up to give back even though their business is taking a loss at this time. This is true community spirit and rising to the occasion to help others in a time of need. Thurmont is a close-knit community and the generosity of the businesses and residents never cease to amaze me.”
Simply Asia remains open for carry-out and delivery services of their Thai, Chinese and Japanese cuisine. They are located at 120 Frederick Road in Thurmont, and orders can be placed by calling 301-271-2857.
Sam Feng presented a $2,020.00 donation to Pastor Sally Joyner Giffin for the Thurmont Food Bank. Thanks to Sam Feng, Simply Asia, Carol Robertson, Karen Simundson and all the customers that helped make this donation possible.
