November 25th, 2023 marked the 13th annual Small Business Saturday. This event falls the Saturday after Thanksgiving between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and is a day to encourage consumers to shop at small and local businesses.
Small Business Saturday is one of the most important days of the year for many small businesses in our communities. In 2022, Small Business Saturday drove an estimated $17.9 billion in sales, with more than two-thirds of shoppers stating that they will continue to shop at small businesses throughout the holiday season and dine at local and independently-owned restaurants, given the importance of small businesses in their community.(American Express)
One might ask, what is the point of shopping local? Shopping at local, small businesses is a great way to support the local economy. Local businesses create more jobs, hire people in the area and contribute to the local tax base. Most of the time, local businesses are more environmentally friendly, often having less packaging and focus their efforts in being an eco-friendly business. Food products are fresher, and you can save money on certain products.
The holiday season is about giving, and the best gift you can give a small business is your support. Shop local, tell a friend, post on social media, write a positive review, and support in any other ways you can.
