Frederick's Top 50: The Plamondon Companies, Prolist, Pleasants Paving, STULZ

Based in Frederick, Maryland, Plamondon Enterprises Inc. own and operate 24 Roy Rogers® Restaurants and oversee 30 franchise locations in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Plamondon Hospitality Partners (PHP) own and operate nine hotels in three states. The Plamondon Companies were established in 1980 and employ over 1,000 full and part-time people in Frederick County.

The Pleasants Companies were established in 1941 with 200 employees. Pleasants Paving makes and provides asphalt in the Frederick area with a plant located in Frederick County. Their fleet is one of the largest in Maryland and they have an on-site Quality Control Lab that is AMRL accredited.

Prolist is a full-service provider of direct mail and direct marketing services. They provide database management, data processing, production management and mailing and fulfillment services to a wide variety of organizations and customers primarily in and around the Washington, DC area. The company located in Frederick County in 2014 and employs 77 in Frederick. 

STULZ is a privately owned, global manufacturer of precision air conditioners, air handlers, ultrasonic humidifiers, desiccant dehumidifiers, and custom solutions, specifically for industrial, commercial, and secure mission critical applications. The company is based in Germany and employs 396 in Frederick.

What do you foresee for your business and/or the economy in 2018?

PL: The Plamondon Companies are optimistic about our growth prospects in this local market and beyond however increased competition overall in the hospitality industry, for us, both in restaurants and hotels has made business more challenging in recent years.

PP: Pleasants Paving sees solid economic growth in 2018. Heavy civil and paving projects continue to be in demand in the Frederick region as the State and Local agencies invest in new and the rehabilitation of their infrastructures.

PR: Prolist has experienced tremendous growth in the last 12 months and expect to see that trend continue as organizations look for tried and true ways to get their messages out to their respective audiences. There also continues to be some contraction in our competitive space creating higher demand.

ST: STULZ has been at the forefront of innovation for 70 years and that will continue through 2018.  The data center industry is evolving quickly and we expect to see the most growth in 2018 with our custom indoor and rooftop air handlers, micro and modular data centers, and other mission critical applications such as grow room facilities. 

What would surprise people about your business?

PL: We started Roy Rogers/Plamondon Enterprises Inc. with one restaurant in 1980. Another surprising fact is that Plamondon Enterprises Inc. owns the trademark to Roy Rogers® Restaurants and we’re headquartered in Frederick, MD.

PP: We employ over 400 families in our region while enjoying a small family business atmosphere and culture. The majority of our company’s leadership has been developed from within in our business as we work hard to provide opportunities for training and advancement within the enterprise of the Pleasants Companies.

PR: Over 35% of our workforce has been with us 10 years or longer!

ST: STULZ USA proudly researches, designs, manufactures, tests, and supports our solutions for North America from our facility in Frederick, MD.  We are truly “Made in America”! 

Why did you choose Frederick County as a business location?

PL: Peter Plamondon Sr., the father of current Co-Presidents, Peter Plamondon Jr. and James Plamondon, started the company in 1980 in an emerging Frederick market by opening the Roy Rogers Restaurant on Rt. 40.Frederick County’s community is a great place to headquarter and host restaurants and hotels, with active community and caring residents yet we have proximity to the metro area.

PP: The diversified workforce that draws from the Frederick region as well as western Maryland and southern Pennsylvania. Frederick also enjoys major transportation routes such as I 270 and I 70 that make it easy to reach other areas in our work footprint.

PR: The overhead and rent costs are considerably lower than in our previous location, in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Also the folks in the office of Economic Development were extremely helpful in getting us relocated and situated.

ST: When STULZ purchased Air Technology Systems in 2001, Frederick was a hub of data center cooling innovation, and the ideal location to grow our business. 

What is keeping your business in Frederick County?

PL: Opening our first Roy Rogers in 1980, our company has developed a strong and vibrant clientele with our great food and service in our restaurants and our hospitality in our hotels.Today we have eight Roy Rogers Restaurant and four Marriott-branded hotels (TownePlace Suites by Marriott, Courtyard by Marriott, Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott, and Residence Inn by Marriott) in Frederick County.The true sense of community and quality workforce is top notch!

PP: The location of our Asphalt Manufacturing facility as well as Fleet Service operation allow us to have a centrally located facility close to a broad employment base and transportation routes.

PR: We love our Frederick county plant location!  It’s economical to do business here and there’s easy access to just about anywhere we need to go (DC, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Baltimore)

ST: Frederick offers a talented workforce and vibrant community that STULZ is happy to be a part of.  It is our hope that we will continue to do great work in Frederick for years to come.

PP: We to be honest we have been honored to receive many awards from the Maryland State Highway as well local agencies and private industry associations but our most valuable award is the satisfaction of our families we employ. We strive to have a safe work culture of well-trained professional equipment operators and truck drivers. It is very rewarding to be able to provide safe and stable employment for these families in our community!

ST: Instead of focusing on our company’s awards or accolades, we want to brag about our employees.  We are lucky to have almost 400 talented engineers, technicians, welders, pipers, painters, assemblers, sales and service professionals, and many more people, working side-by-side in Frederick.  We are proud of the work they do every day to make STULZ the best in the business.
