Line Will Connect Walkersville with City of Frederick
FREDERICK, Md. – The Transportation Priorities Board of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments today approved a $5.28 million grant to Frederick County to build Phase I of the Frederick and Pennsylvania Line Railroad Trail, a 1.8-mile section from Monocacy Boulevard in the City of Frederick to the Fountain Rock Nature Center in Walkersville. The F&PL Trail will cross over Tuscarora Creek and the Monocacy River, ultimately connecting with the proposed East Street Rails-with-Trail project.
“We are very excited to be able to construct this trail,” Frederick County Executive Jan Gardner said. “This will be an important connection for people who want to walk or bicycle safely in and out of the city.”
The 10-foot-wide asphalt trail will follow the railroad right-of-way owned by the Maryland Transportation Administration and leased to the Walkersville Southern Railroad. Funding for the grant is through the Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside Program Funding under the Surface Transportation Block Grant Program.
