Commuter Connections, a regional network of transportation organizations coordinated by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments in Washington, D.C., works with regional employers and their employees to assist with commuter benefits and alternatives to driving alone to and from work.
Commuter Connections operates two free programs for commuters in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region; a computerized ridematching database and Guaranteed Ride Home.
Ridematching Database
Commuter Connection’s Rideshare Database contains over 17,000 commuters from the region and matches them based on work hours and commute locations. To set up a profile, commuters provide home and employer locations, work hours, and schedule flexibility. Once the profile is complete, regional transportation organizations approve and send matchlists to commuters in their jurisdiction. Commuters interested in finding a carpool or vanpool can contact commuters on their matchlist or utilize their local jurisdiction transit or Rideshare office for support. The service is free and there is no obligation.
Guaranteed Ride Home
Have you ever taken the train to work and suddenly felt ill and wondered how to get home if the train isn’t running yet? Or have you considered ridesharing with someone but feared you may be stranded at work if one of you has to work late unexpectedly? There is a solution. Guaranteed Ride Home is a free program commonly referred to as a commuters’ back up plan for those unexpected incidences. The program allows four free rides home per year in case of illness, family emergency or unscheduled overtime. Commuters who commute to work using an alternative form of transportation (i.e. MARC train, carpool, vanpool, Commuter Bus, etc.) at least twice per week are eligible for the program and must register.
