The State of Maryland recently announced the designation of the Town of New Market as a Main Street Maryland community. New Market is one of 30 Main Streets statewide and part of the National Trust for Historic
“New Market is pleased to receive this distinction,” said Winslow F. Burhans, Mayor of New Market. “Becoming a Main Street opens additional opportunities for our Town and local businesses giving us priority for future state grant opportunities and a statewide presence. We’re excited about the future and open for business!”
“I’m delighted New Market has become a Main Street Maryland,” stated Patricia L. Faux, New Market’s Town Planner. The program “entailed approximately three years of dedicated effort to meet requirements.”
Becoming a Main Street Maryland is the latest achievement in New Market’s revitalization efforts and will continue the renewal of its historic downtown district. Partnering with local businesses, the New Market Civic Partnership, the New Market Green Team and Special Events Committee in promoting activities ranging from Community Supported Agriculture programs to bi-monthly events celebrating New Market’s rich history such as Founder’s Day, Harvest Festival and 5k Fighter Run, and the upcoming Christmas in New Market.
New Market, founded in 1793, is growing as a commercial and tourist destination with an array of unique shops, dining, and entertainment establishments. Recent businesses who have opened include Peridot, a gift shop and wellness space; The Derby Restaurant & Bar – bringing a unique and flavorful spin on local favorites, crafted with fresh regional produce and high-quality ingredients; and the anticipated opening on November 10th of Cuppa Love Teashop – carrying teas from around the world and tea accessories.
