Surface and Groundwater
Frederick County is part of the Potomac River Basin and has two major
drainage basins, Catoctin Creek and the Monocacy River.
Forests
Approximately 29% of the county is covered by forested land, which is
prevalent in the mountainous areas and the eastern regions of the county.
Air Quality
Frederick County is currently classified as a non-attainment area for
ozone. The County complies with the State of Maryland's Air Quality
Standards, which are now in effect for sulfur oxides, particulate matter,
carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone and lead.
Minerals
Frederick County has an abundant supply of minerals, which are mined
in varying degrees, including limestone, shale, quartzite, sand, gravel,
copper, gold, silver, iron ore, crushed stone, building and ornamental
stone.
Soil
The two major soil groupings found in the county are classified as "Stony,
Steep and Shallow Soils of Mountain and Elevated Intermountain Areas"
(23% of the county) and "Soils of the Piedmont Plateau" (37% of the
